Domestic Violence Counselling

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another.

It is a serious and pervasive problem, with devastating consequences for its victims, their families & friends, and the wider community.

Domestic violence does not have to be physical, many experiencing it will never have any bruises or physical injuries. It can take many forms — including emotional & psychological abuse — and the impacts can be as, if not more, severe & long-lasting.

Physical Health

The lasting effects of undergoing or witnessing trauma may cause chronic physical problems throughout life. Undergoing trauma, or witnessing trauma, are associated with a risk of:

  • Cardio-vascular disease
  • Arteriosclerosis or hypertension
  • Gastrointestinal disease
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Obesity
Mental Health

People who have experienced domestic abuse also report higher levels of:

Poverty & Homelessness

Domestic abuse and poverty are intricately interwoven. Costs borne by individuals because of the violence they experience include:

  • Healthcare costs
  • Housing & shelter costs
  • Potential legal costs

These costs can add up, further adding to the stress & existing trauma by pushing victims into poverty, making it more difficult to end domestic abuse and heal from its effects.
